Personal Reflection

This is my grade 8 2011 e-portfolio. I know it's kind of different from other years but I like this portfolio because it is very easy to edit. Two things that I do really well is working quickly and efficiently. Two things I need to improve on is improving my penmanship and finishing all my homework. My goal for the next six weeks is finishing all assignments to the best of my ability.

My Subjects

L.A

GRADE EIGHT STUDENT ASSIGNMENT- PORTFOLIO REFLECTION
TASK/INTENT/CRITERIA
Throughout the year I have completed assignments based on Assessment for Learning practices. The learning process has followed the three key components:
Subject: L.A, Short Story- "Thank You Ma'am"TASK: What was I asked to do for this assignment?
I was required to compose a friendly letter using information from a short story.
INTENT: Why am I completing this assignment?
There are several reasons I am doing this writing assignment. First, i learned the elements of a short story and learned to identify them in our story. Next, we learned the components to write in a friendly letter format. then, we applied specific story details and wrote in the first person as if we were a character from the short story.
CRITERIA: How do I know what I needed to do to be successful in completing this assignment?
  • Use proper Friendly letter format referring to letter frame
  • Compose the rough copy letter using specific details from the short story and write the letter from the perspective of one of the main characters in the story.
  • Remember to use appropriate tone a and audience for the letter
  • Complete all steps in the writing process as set out in the assignment directions
NEXT STEPS: I can now identify the elements of a short story and find them in a text. I can now support my thoughts using specific examples from a text. I can now write with the appropriate tone while thinkin aout who my audience is. I can now write a piece of writing from the point of view of a character. I can now complete a piece of writing by going through all the steps of the writing process.

GRADE EIGHT STUDENT ASSIGNMENT- PORTFOLIO REFLECTION
TASK/INTENT/CRITERIA
Throughout the year I have completed assignments based on Assessment for Learning practices. The learning process has followed the three key components:
Subject: L.A, Simile Definition CardTASK: What was I asked to do for this assignment?
I was required to create a definition card that shows a definition, an example and a picture of a simile.

INTENT: Why am I completing this assignment?
A reason that we completed this assignment was that it helped use to know what a simile is, how to create one and to find them in various texts. Next, it helped me visually represent a simile. Finally, I can use these cards to study for tests

CRITERIA: How do I know what I needed to do to be successful in completing this assignment?
  • Created example of simile
  • Visually represent that simile (writing and drawing)
  • Neatly done (colouring, writing)

NEXT STEPS: I can now identify similes in various texts and understand how they apply to the text. I can now create effective and creative similes. I can now use this as a tool to study for the L.A test/exam.

GRADE EIGHT STUDENT ASSIGNMENT- PORTFOLIO REFLECTION
TASK/INTENT/CRITERIA
Throughout the year I have completed assignments based on Assessment for Learning practices. The learning process has followed the three key components:
Subject: S.S, Cro-Magnon PosterTASK: What was I asked to do for this assignment?I was required to make a poster outlining the social organization, the homes, food, and the tools used by the Cro-Magnon people.
INTENT: Why am I completing this assignment?
There are several reasons why I completed this assignment. First, this assignment helped me comprehend visually how the Cro-Magnons may have lived. Also, this assignment helped me to created a visual organizer which is one way of representing your ideas. Finally, this assignment helped me prepare for the unit test by serving as a study gudie of Cro-Magnon daily life.

CRITERIA: How do I know what I needed to do to be successful in completing this assignment?
  • Create a visual organizer to show specific details/aspects of Cro-Magnon daily life (home, social organization, food, tools)
  • Each section of poster needed heading
  • Followed the rubric given to complete task (title, neat images/colouring)

NEXT STEPS: I can now create a visual organizer showing important details for specific topics. I can now use this assignment as a study tool that I can use to prepare for a test.
I can now create rubrics/criteria for how to complete and assignment and I can follow them to complete an assignment successfully.

Math

First Term Reflection

Although it was the first term our class still learned a lot in September, October and November. I learned about about ratios, rates and proportions. Our second unit was on the Pythagorean relationship. I only knew a little bit about ratios, rates and proportions before this term and I knew even less about Pythagoras. But thanks to the term I now know that the formula for finding a right triangle is a2+b2=c2. I now know that a rate compares 2 quantities measured in different units.

I felt I did well in my first term but I can always do better. I should do all my homework, participate on the blog more and make sure I understand all the concepts fully. This can make me do better in my math tests and exams. All in all I did well but I can do better.

Term 2 Reflection

This term was very busy. I really liked this term because it a had a lot of subjects I easily understood like volume, surface area and percent.

I felt I did well in volume because I almost got all of the tests and quizzes correct. It was really easy for me to understand volume. I had no problem knowing that volume is the space and object takes up. To find the volume of a rectangular prism you multiply the length x width x height. To find the volume of a triangular prism you multiply base x height*2/2 x height*2. Finally to find the volume of a cylinder you multiply π x r x r x h.

One thing I struggled with was understand and drawing nets for total surface area. I got confused with the different parts like top, bottom, and sides. I sometimes didn’t know what the lateral area was. I instead used formulas because I could memorize them.

Next term I will continue to do my homework regularly so I can understand the subject clearly. If I’m given two methods to solve a problem I will practice both methods so I will have many different tools to help me succeed

Here are a few things we learned this term
  • We learned that percent means “out of 100.”
  • Area is how much is needed to cover a shape
  • Total surface area is how much is needed to cover a 3-D shape.
  • Volume is how much space a 3-D shape takes.Integers
On my integer test I got 19 out of 27. One of the most common mistakes I made was not noticing when there was a subtract sign in front of a negative. I didn’t use the double negative rule which changes those two negative signs to a plus sign. Another thing I didn’t do well was following the order of operations. On question 7, 25 - (-10) / (-5) I just went from left to right without doing the division part before the subtraction.

One thing I really improved on this term was doing all the homework assignments. Usually I do some of it but never all. That was one bright spot in a rough integer unit for me.

My favourite sport this year by far in Phys. Ed is basketball. I like this sport because it's a fast-paced team oriented game. This year we focused less on skills and focused more on playing games.

2 Minutes to Make A Difference

My topic for 2 minutes to make a difference is animal abandonment. Our big question was " what would happen to abandoned animals if animal shelters could no longer take in animals?" Some key points we have researched is that animal abandonment is extremely hard to stop because it doesn't happen in the open. At this point in our project we are just finishing getting our media together (picture/videos). I think we can make our 11th first draft deadline.
